We thought the slow pitch games were tight ! Fast pitch night margin of victories were razor thin. Week 5 was the first COWL crack at fast pitch and the evenings did not disappoint. I received rave reviews from all most all players with seveal "I like this better than slow pitch comments." Maybe next year we will do 1/2 and 1/2 ?T First our impressions on the first ever fast pitch night for COWL. I think everyone had a blast as evidenced by the positive comments and all the hootin' and hollerin' which occurred. Our analysis in a nutshell; there are some very good overhand pitchers and some guys who can hit no matter how fast the ball is travelling toward them. Dave and Brett Fisher, Collin Hill and Dave Page are solid pitchers with even their non strikes being close enough to tempt. Shay Netter is respectable and will is among a list of pitchers who will improve dramatically as more fast pitch nights come around. PVB had the biggest margins of victory, going 4-0 on night 2. PVB opened up with a barn-burning 4-3 win over the U, as Brett Fisher threw a complete game with 4 Ks. He also added 2 HRs in an outstanding overall performance. Brett led the way in game 2 as PVB pummelled the Kinghts 16-1. Brett again picked up the win on the mound recording 2 more K's. Dave was a one man wrecking crew crushing 3 HRs while driving in 10 RBIs. In game 3 Dave Fisher pitched an excellent game recording 5 Ks against the tough Redlegs, who were getting their first fast pitch experience. The Redlegs had a tear jerker night in their first go at fast pitch, losing to the Knights 4-2 after a Dustin Weaver 2 run walk off HR in the bottom of the 5th. Game 2 was no different as Shondrick Locklear crushed a walk off solo HR in the bottom of the 5th to push the U past the Redlegs 2-1. Brad Miller had a solo HR for the Redlegs only run. In game 3 Dave Fisher buffaloed the Redlegs as PVB laid a 9-0 whoppin on 'em. The Knights also were getting their first taste of fast pitch and accorded themselves well. Dustin Weaver provided the fireworks in game 1 vs the Redlegs as he crushed a 1 out 2 run walk off HR to claim game 1 4-2. Dustin had 2 HRs and 4 RBIs to account for all Knight runs in the game. Game 2 was not so pleasant as the PVB freight train flattened the Knights 16-1. Game 3 was a down to the wire affair as the U pushed across 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th to beat the Knights 5-2, with Amos delivering both runs on solo HRs. The Legends finished the night undefeated but had 3 very tight games, first defeating Brothers x2 6-2 on back-to-back HRs by Jerry and Levi. Luke Parker also smashed a solo shot in the game. In game 2 the Legends blew open a close game against the U in the 3rd with a 7 run inning with Jerry and Levi again hitting HRs. In the nightcap the Legends squeaked out a tight 5-2 game agains GDE as Levi crushed a 3 run HR in the 3rd to provide the margin of victory. Blake Lansing smashed a HR also. For the Legends Jerry picked up all 4 pitching victories, Levi had 3 HRs with 9 RBIs and Jerry added 2 HRs. GDE finished the night 3-1 with an opening night 10-3 victory against the U. Jordan Nelson crushed a HR in the defeat. In game 2 GDE used a 4 run 4th inning to break open a 7-3 win. Blake Lansing hit a HR and had 4 RBIs in the win. On the night Dave Page picked up 3 pitching wins and 9 RBIs with Blake Lansing adding a HR and 8 RBIs. The U had a couple of good nights, finishing 2-2 on night 1 and crushing 9 HRs as a team. After losing back-to-back games against tough opponents GDE and the Legends, the U defeated Brothers x2 in a marathon game 16-14. John Kepler picked up the win as Shondrick claimed the single game fast records for HRs and RBIs with 4 and 9. On the night Shay added 3 HRs and 5 RBIs while Jordan Nelson was the only player to record a HR in all 3 games. On night 2, filling in for the AWOL Blade Sharp, the U lost a heart breaker to PVB 4-3 after advancing the tying run to 2nd base with only 1 out. They rebounded to win a crucial conference game agains the American League leading Redlegs 2-1 on a walk solo shot by Shondrick. Game 3 was also a dog fight as the U edged the Knights 5-2 by virtue of 3 Shondrick HRs. Blade Sharp did not show for either night and thus forfeited games to all 7 league opponents, and a 3 game makeup series to the U. All-in-all we consider the first COWL fast pitch nights as a huge success and look forward to night 2 when PVB and the Legends will put their undefeated fast pitch records on the line !
COWL Wiffler of Fast Pitch Week 1 Return to Top Several players rate special consideration for the first ever COWL fast pitch night. Shondrick Locklear nearly single handedly crushed the U back into league title contention with 10 HRs and 13 RBIS. Jerry Driggs pitched 3 solid games, striking out a total of 23 batters on the night, including a high of 10 against the U. But the first COWL fast pitch Wiffler of the Week goes to Brett Fisher, striking one for the old guys, showing grey hair is no indication the train has passed over the hill. Brett won 2 games pitching with a total of 6 K's, and had a record night with 6 HRs and 15 RBIs at the plate. For his astounding performance (at any age, but especially his) Brett claims COWL Wiffler of the Week for Fast Pitch Night 1 (and a free bottle of Geritol). Fellow COWLers and the AARP say way to represent Brett !
