The National League is going to be very competitive. There were very close games between all league
teams with GDE beating 3JT 8-6 with the tying run at the plate a ball hit off the fence in the final inning.
This conference may well be decided by who can "steal" the most games from American League teams
as it appears the conference games are going to be very close each night.
In the American League, the Legends got off to a very quick start, which makes sense as they have
already put in lots of scrimmage hours preparing the new fields. Wall-2-Wall proved they can win, even
when they are not hitting their best. When they do start to hit, and get Paul back, they will be very
difficult to beat. The Pleasant Valley Boys did fantastic, considering it was their first time to play this
year. The Fisher Boys hammered the ball and fielded like crazy and Trevor adds a very consistent fielder
and bat to the lineup. Once they are in the swing and have all their players, they will be another great team.
The Paints, while being short 1 regular player, posted impressive wins over Wall-2-Wall in 2 games,
and lost 2 close games to the Legends. Aaron Ragland led the Paints with 8 home runs, while Derrick Webb
added 7 home runs and drove in a league leading 21 runs in the 4 games. Both Joey Davis and sub Corey
Hancock added 4 HRs and 8 RBIs.
COWL Wiffler of the Week Return to Top
By unanimous choice of the commissioning board, Janae Driggs from 3JT earns COWL Week 1 Player of the Week,
winning a cool T-shirt in the process. Janae pitched 3JT to their first win, hammered 6 home runs (10 with the Kentucky
game included) and had 10 RBIs (17 with Kentucky). She also had a dramatic walk-off homer against the U and narrowly
missed another against GDE. Congratulations to Janae for being COWL POW Week 1 . As a team, the 3JT were right in
the thick of all their games. If their old guys (Tim and Jim) hadn't given out, they may have been leading the National.
Perhaps in a few weeks, after their endurance has improved, they will win those close games at night end.
Brent Fisher of the Pleasant Valley Boys finishes in a close second for COWL POW Week 1, hammering 9 HRs in 4
games and driving in 14 RBIs and proving old guys can still play some. The Fisher Boys did it both in the field and at the
plate and brother Dave gave a stirring imitation of the FTD man, making leaping catches all over the field. The comment
from the gallery I heard was that, "Someone should tell him his age before he hurts himself."
Honorable mentions go to Dave Page of GDE, who pitched his team to one of their conference leading 2 victories, hit 6
HRs and had 15 RBIs. GDE has improved dramatically from a year ago and is a real threat to win the National
Brent for the U also hammered 6 HRs and had 10 RBI's to lead his team, who are only 1 game back in the National League.
The U is still learning the game, but already have shown a tremendous amount of improvement in the few weeks they have been playing.
Levi Driggs gains honorable mention for the Legends, pitching his team to their 1st season victory against the
ever-dangerous Pleasant Valley Boys, and also banging out 7 home runs (11 with the Kentucky game included) and 12
RBIs (16 with the Kentucky). As a team, the Legends were very consistent, with all members staking a claim in the league
HR leaders. This is to be expected as they have the most competitive wiffleball experience. They will be hard-pressed
to maintain this lead with a bulls-eye on their unis and as other teams catch up as the year goes on.
Nathaniel Sprouse led Wall-2-Wall to a league second best 2-1 record, pitching to a victory against the U and hammering
a team leading 3 home runs and 6 RBIs. The old guys, Anthony Kennedy and Hop-a-long Red-Eye Rick Manion also
contributed to W2W's fast start, helping W2W to a league leading defense of 4 runs per game.
