2012 COWL Week 2 Series Summaries 2012 COWL Week 2 was a week of contradictions and place staking. J&M hosted Division rivals UMH and the U in a key division matchup. TLC field featured undefeated PVB vs the league's leading offense in the Legends. AP sought to keep the surging Knights in their rear view mirror while the Dirt Dogs looked to build on week 1 success by landing blows against 2011 National Division champ Redlegs. Take a good look at the team stats after week 2. How's that for contradiction. The top 3 teams in offense are in exactly reversed order for defense. Do they score enough runs they don't need to play D ? Can they not play D ? Do they bring out the best in other teams who know they must ratchet it up offensively to have a chance to win ? Or could it be they have played each other and already faced the best offenses in the league ? It will be interesting to see how this stat progresses. In any case, these teams are at or near the top of their prospective divisions. So maybe D just isn't all its cracked up to be. Starting in the Contenders Division, the Dirt Dogs attacked the Redlegs on CC field with the Reds gaining home team via flip. After starting 1-2 vs UMH the Redlegs needed a series win to stay near the top of the division while the Dirt Dogs are still getting their sea legs. On a crisp night with heavy air and some wind, runs, always at a premium on CC, would prove to be hard to come by. The Reds managed to win a very tight 4-1 victory in Game 1 with Blake Rinehart on the mound. Lucas Detty launched the Dirt Dogs to an early 1-0 lead in the 1st with a solo shot, but the Reds rebounded in inning 2 with the only 2 runs they would need to seal this victory. Brad Miller added a solo HR in the 4th inning to close out. Game 2 was even tighter with Matt Hoops providing all the offense required in inning 2 with a solo HR. Reds ace Matt Hoops would make the 2-0 lead last to the finish for his 2nd win of the year. The Red's bats came to life early game 3, with both Blake and Matt hitting HRs in inning 1. The Dirt Dogs finally got their offense rolling in the 3rd, but could only manage 2 runs and fell 6-2 as Brad Miller picked up his 1st win on the mound for the year. Runs are always at a premium on CC field, and usually come via HRs, so with heavy air and some wind to left, it is little wonder there were only 15 runs total scored by both team in the series. The sweep moves the Redlegs back to top spot in the division, while the Dirt Dogs will regroup this week and start their climb back into contention against the U. The U went into week 2 winless, and unfortunately, exited their series against perennial power house UMH with no change. Old scoring woes seemed to revisit the U and they are experiencing what every baseball team dreads...the SLUMP. One of the editor's scariest childhood memories was due to a slump the '75 Reds encountered. Hearing that Tony Perez had stuffed Davey Concepcion in a dryer in an attempt to break a slump Davey was in, my wiser older brother thought it would be cool to do the same thing to his little brother. What did I know - he was way older and smarter than me. Plus, clothes make it thru ok, my thought was it couldn't be that tough. Point of fact : It gets REALLY hot in a dryer, REALLY fast. I thought I was a dead man, or kid, I guess. Anyway, hitting woes continued for the U as home team on J&M in game 1 as Dave Page pitched UMH to a 12-1 win in game 1. Dave also provided the offense, crushing 3 HRs and delivering 8 RBIs. Game 2 was much closer as the U made took the lead in the top of the 4th after a 3 run inning put them up 4-1. UMH responded with 4 to win, including a 3 run HR by Dave as lefty Blake Lansing got the win. The U got some traction in game 3, taking a 2-0 lead into the 4th. UMH fought back with HRs by Eric Lewis, John Bruce and Dave to grab a 3-2 lead. The 5th was all UMH as they pushed across 7 in the top of the inning to sweep the series with a 10-2 game 3 win for Mr. Bruce. For the series Dave Page led all hitters with 5 HRs and 14 RBIs as UMH moved into the lead in the Champions Division. PVB was the only team to be undefeated in week 1 and their streak was placed in jeopardy with their pairing in week 2 against the Legends. Operating short handed with only the Brothers Fisher and Gabe, PVB never-the-less put up a valliant effort. The home Legends chose to bat first on their home field TLC and got off to a decent start after HRs by Levi and Jerry opened the game with a 4-0 lead. Inning 2 was a prototypical Legends inning as all 4 players hit HRs with Jerry & Levi contributing 2 each to build a 14-0 lead. PVB responded as Dave upped the ante by crushing 3 HRs in the inning. The rest of the game was all Legends as Levi & Jerry finished with 5 HRs each while Ben & Phill added 2. Dave crushed 4 HRs for PVB while Gabe hit 3. Legends ace and 14 game winner Ben Cydrus picked up his 1st victory of the year. Game 2 had an entirely different feel as PVB began the game with innings of 5, 4 and 4 runs while the Legends could only manage 2 against the pitching of Dave Fisher. Heading into the bottom of the 5th the Legends were down 17-8. Phill King jump started the Legends with a 3 and 2 run HR while Jerry added another 3 runner to narrow the score to 17-15 with 1 out. After a solid base hit by Phill Jerry lined a pitch to dead center off the top of the fence for a single, bringing the winning run in Levi to the plate. Levi, badly off for most of the game, reverted to normal form and crushed a long 3 run walk off for the win. Jerry picked up the narrow escape win on the mound. Game 3 was completed before the Week 4 Friday night games and it was largely unremarkable, except for the return of one of the league's elite female players, Janae Driggs, after a year on waivers. Janae was called up to fill in for the MIA Legends ace Ben Cydrus as a 4th. Game 3 of the series started with a lone HR by Dave Fisher of PVN as Janae was immediately sent into the fray as the starting pitcher. The Legends provided support in the bottom of 1 on 2 HRs by Jerry and Nae helped her own cause by hitting her 1st HR after her return. PVB struck for 4 in the 2nd but the Legends again responded with a big inning after Jerry and Levi crushed HRs to lead 10-4. The teams traded 3 run innings in the 3rd and the Legends put the game away with 2 in the 4th and an egg for PVB, claiming the contest and a series sweep as Janae won her 1st game with a masterful 12-7 outing. For the series Jerry led all hitters with 11 HRs and 18 RBIs while Levi added 9 and 14 of his own and Phill had a productive series crushing 5 HRs with 13 RBIs. Dave led PVB with 10 HRs and 16 RBIs. For the series, Dave Fisher, fresh off his designation as Week 1 Wiffler of the Week, led all batters with 9 HRs and 14 RBIs. Gabed added 5 HRs and Brent had a good night with 4. Levi and Jerry led the Legends with 7 HRs each, but it was Phill King who rescued the Legends with an uncharacteristic power surge for 5 HRs and 13 RBIs. The last series of the week pitted 2 middle of the pack entries in the Contenders division - teams the odds favor as winning the division in Abusement Park or the Knights. The Knights garnered home field by virtue of the flip. Game 1 did not disappoint as the Knights rallied from a 5-0 deficit to take an 8-7 lead into the 5th. After scoring 2 runs to make the score 8-7 AP loaded the bases with 2 outs but a deep fly by Collin Hill was caught at the base of the fence as Corey White preserved the victory for the Knights for a game 1 win. Amos Jones led all batters with 3 HRs in game 1. Game 2 was once again very close, but with an opposite script as the Knights exploded in the top of the 1st for 7 runs on HRs by Amos, Corey and Dustin Weaver. AP leaked back into the game slowly, capping off their victory with a 5 run 4th highlighted by an Emily Manson grand slam. Emily was the start of the game, picking up the pitching win and providing the offensive fireworks, crushing 3 HRs. The series rubber match pitted newcomer Josh Wonderleigh against Collin Hill on the mound. The Knights went to work early, staking an early lead on double HRs by Corey and Josh, building a 14-2 lead heading into the 4th. AP had success getting men on base, twice loading the bases, but they were unable to get key hits and fell 14-5 as Josh picked up the win on the mound close the series in favor of the Knights 2-1. For the series Collin Hill led AP with 4 HRs and 8 RBIs while Amos Jones led the Knights with 5 HRs and 10 RBIs. Upset Award of the Week The surprise upset of the week did not materialize ... but it was close. Trailing 17-8 heading into the bottom of the 5th, shorthanded PVB nearly handed COWL World Series Champs the Legends a bitter loss. The Legends rallied behind 2 HRs from Phil and a walk off 3 runner by Levi to stave off PVB The Legends were lazy in the field and at the plate and it showed in the score. PVB pulled together, and even with big gaps in the field, Dave clearly hobbled, and a little leaguer in left, almost took down the class of the league. Clearly, if you don't show up, any team in this league will bite.
COWL Wiffler of the Week Return to Top
Dave Page - Uncle Muscle's Hour 2012 COWL Week 2 Wiffler of the Week was a more difficult choice than usual. Not because there were no solid performances - but more because there were very few outstanding ones. Lots of players from multiple teams had very solid games, and solid series - but no jaw droppers this week. Dave had an very productive series in leading UMH to the top of the Champions Division. UMH swept last year's COWL World Series runners-up, The U, with Dave leading the way with 5 HRs and a very respectable 14 RBIs. Dave also picked up a pitching win and hit multiple key HRs in the series, providing the bulk of the significant RBIs in the sweep. Gaining honorable mention for week 2 is Legend's leadoff man Phill King, whose timely power surge lifted them to a series sweep of PVB. Once again Dave Fisher played like a madman, leading all hitters for the week by crushing 9 HRs with 14 RBIs. He was 2 outs away from being our 1st back-to-back Wiffler of the Week. Amos Jones also deserves special mention as he led the Knights with 5 HRs and 10 RBIs in their 2-1 series victory over AP. Our first lady receives honorable mention as Emily Manson had a monster game against the Knights, crushing 3 HRs, including a granny, while picking up the win on the mound also. Congratulations to Dave and all other honorable mentions for week 2. Gotta shirt for you Dave.... Box Scores (Home team on top) Return to Top Lucas Detty DD(1) Brad Miller RL(1)
